The Indian women’s football team wrapped up their international tour with a 2-1 loss to Belarus at the AGMK Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Thursday.

Though India matched Belarus in the opening half, the European team scored through a Shuppo Nastassia penalty in the 66th minute before Pilipenka Hanna doubled the advantage 10 minutes later.

India’s only goal of the game came in the dying moments when Sangita Basfore let one fly from 30 yards that dipped below the crossbar to hand her side a consolation.

On Thursday, India was quick to press for the advantage in the first half and came close to scoring in the third minute. But Soumya Guguloth’s strike from outside the penalty area could only rattle the crossbar while striker Pyari Xaxa’s attempt from the rebound looped over.

As the match progressed, the Belarusians grew in confidence and soon asked questions of the Indian defence.

Pilipenka Hanna and Shuppo Nastassia were lively on the field as the two combined well to create openings for Belarus. The Indian football team, however, did well to thwart the danger away.

Though the Indian head coach Maymol Rocky brought in the experienced Ashalata Devi towards the end of the opening half, the Manipuri could hardly influence the play as the teams headed into the break 0-0.

Post the break, Belarus came out with purpose and it was evident in the way they toyed with the Indian football team to make inroads into the penalty area with ease.

One such move saw a Belarus attacker trip inside the box, leaving the referee with an easy decision of a penalty kick. Shuppo Nastassia was spot on with her take despite the Indian goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan guessing the right way, as the ball evaded her into the goal.

Soon, Belarus got a second goal with Pilipenka Hanna finding enough space inside the penalty box to squeeze in a shot between the goalkeeper and her near post.

India came close to scoring but nothing found its way into Belarus’ goal as Manisha’s attempt from inside the box was saved with ease while Sangita Basfore’s free-kick sailed over the crossbar.

Sangita Basfore, however, made up for the miss with an audacious take from 30 yards that sneaked below the crossbar to hand India their only goal on the tour.
