The Dutch gymnastics federation announced Wednesday that it was suspending its elite training program in order to investigate recent abuse allegations. One of the coaches under investigation for ‘unacceptable behavior and intimidation’ is Vincent Wevers, whose daughter, Sanne, won Olympic gold on the balance beam at Rio 2016.
The suspension in training comes as gymnastics athletes from around the world have stepped forward to share their stories of abusive training after the release of the Netflix documentary ‘Athlete A.’
Sanne Wevers, along with other current Dutch athletes, posted on Instagram that they had not suffered the alleged abuse.
“We do not recognise ourselves in the picture that is now sketched of Dutch gymnastics with regard to the stories of the past,” the statement read. “Where in the past, there was room for physical and mental abuse, this is, in our opinion, a thing of the past.”
